The picturesque hills of Kashmir, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Gurez, witnessed light snowfall today, marking the early arrival of winter in the region. By evening, rains lashed several parts of the Valley, including Srinagar, following hours of gusty winds that swept across the area. The sudden change in weather brought a noticeable dip in temperature across Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the Meteorological Department (MeT), the snowfall began in higher reaches such as Razdan Top, Furkiyan Top, Doodhpathri, and other mountainous zones early this afternoon. The plains, meanwhile, experienced strong winds that later gave way to widespread rainfall.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, said the weather will remain generally cloudy on November 5, with a likelihood of light to moderate rain or snowfall over higher reaches of the Kashmir division and at scattered places in the Jammu region, particularly between the evening of November 4 and early morning of November 5.
The official further stated that dry weather is expected to prevail across Jammu and Kashmir from November 6 to November 15, providing a brief respite after the current spell of precipitation. However, he also noted that both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to drop further starting tomorrow, intensifying the winter chill in the region.
Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions as the first significant spell of rain and snow could affect travel on higher mountain passes and disrupt normal activities in parts of north Kashmir.
